Galway city centre is small enough to walk end to end in under twenty minutes, which keeps this choice simpler than in a bigger city — it mostly comes down to whether you want to be in the middle of things or a short walk from them.

Eyre Square and the Latin Quarter

Galway's compact historic centre, and the natural choice for a first visit — the Spanish Arch, the cobbled Latin Quarter and most of the city's live-music pubs are all within easy walking distance. It's also the most expensive part of the city for accommodation, reflecting how central it is. See Things to Do in Galway for what this area actually puts you next to.

Salthill

A seafront suburb just outside the city centre, built around Galway Bay's promenade. It's quieter than the Latin Quarter, generally better suited to families, and still only a 20–30 minute walk or a short bus ride from town — close enough to use the centre in the evening without staying in the middle of it.

Newcastle and further out

A little further from the centre than either of the above, and generally better value as a result, while still being a manageable walk or short bus ride from Galway's main sights. Worth considering if price matters more than being in the thick of it.

Choosing between them

First visit and want to walk everywhere: Eyre Square or the Latin Quarter, price allowing. Travelling with family or want a quieter evening by the sea: Salthill. Budget is the priority: Newcastle or similar areas a little further out.
