Killarney is Kerry's base town for a reason — but where you stay in and around it depends mostly on whether you're driving, since the best options for each are genuinely different.

Killarney town centre

The most convenient base if you're not driving: pubs, restaurants and Killarney National Park are all within walking distance, and the town has a train station with direct services to Cork and Dublin. It's also the busiest and loudest option, particularly at weekends, and many town-centre hotels and guesthouses don't have their own parking, so driving in only adds a search for a space on arrival. See our Killarney Guide for what's actually in the town itself.

Muckross Road and the edge of the park

A short drive or cycle from the town centre, directly across from Killarney National Park. Accommodation here generally comes with its own parking, which makes it a straightforward choice if you're driving and want to be close to the park's sights without the town centre's weekend noise.

Ring of Kerry villages

If you're driving the Ring of Kerry and don't need to be based in Killarney itself, a village at the start of the route is worth considering. Fossa and Aghadoe, both just outside Killarney, put you right at the beginning of the drive. Kenmare, further out, sits between the Ring of Kerry and the smaller Ring of Beara, and is well known for its food — it works as a genuine alternative base for either route rather than a day trip from Killarney.

Choosing between them

No car and want to walk everywhere in the evening: Killarney town centre. Driving and want parking sorted without thinking about it: Muckross Road. Driving and want a quieter base right at the start of the Ring: Fossa, Aghadoe or Kenmare.

Frequently asked questions

Is Killarney town a good base without a car?

Yes — it's the most convenient base if you're not driving, with Killarney National Park on its doorstep and pubs and restaurants within walking distance. The trade-off is that it's busier and louder at weekends than the alternatives, and many town-centre hotels don't have their own car park.

Where should I stay if I'm driving the Ring of Kerry?

Muckross Road, right on the edge of the national park, or a village at the start of the Ring like Fossa or Aghadoe, both a few minutes from Killarney. All generally come with their own parking, which saves hunting for a space in town first thing.

Is Kenmare a good alternative to Killarney?

Yes, if you want somewhere quieter with its own strong food scene — Kenmare sits between the Ring of Kerry and the Ring of Beara, so it works as a base for either route, but it's a genuine alternative to Killarney rather than a short trip from it.
